Gun law reform group aims for new controls in Vt.

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

A gun law reform group issued a call to arms Tuesday, making it known they plan to push for new gun controls in the 2015 legislative session.

At a Statehouse press conference, Gun Sense Vermont spokespeople argued for universal background checks on all firearms sales in the state. They pointed to a recent poll of 600 likely voters indicating strong support for such a move, including from gun owners and Republicans.

"Criminal background checks on all gun sales will protect Vermonters and save lives. We call upon the gun lobby to join us in fixing this broken law. We call on them to stand with Vermonters from all walks of life who won't wait on Washington," said Ann Braden, of Gun Sense Vermont.

The Legislature rejected a series of proposed reforms last year in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting.

Advocates say their polling shows lawmakers who support new gun controls would receive support in elections.
