Competing NH hospital tax fixes being offered

Posted: Updated:
CONCORD, N.H. -

New Hampshire lawmakers are working to fix a hospital tax thanks in part to a lawsuit filed by Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock and nine other hospitals sued the state two years ago, claiming the tax violates the federal Medicaid Act. It taxes hospitals 5.5 percent on net patient revenues, while reducing payments for caring for the poor.

A proposal set to go before the New Hampshire Senate would reduce the tax to 4.5 percent.

The House meets Wednesday to discuss possible fixes to the tax.
