New Hampshire House keeps ban on liquor billboards

Posted: Updated:

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - The House has killed a bill that would have allowed advertising alcoholic beverages on New Hampshire billboards.

The House voted 193-164 Wednesday to kill the bill that had passed the Senate 13-11. The bill also prohibited placing the ads within 500 feet of a school and listing retail prices in the billboard ads.

Billboard supporters say the ban unconstitutionally limits commercial free speech and pointed out that signs on state highways advertise New Hampshire's state-run liquor stores.

Opponents argued the signs could encourage young people to drink. They also said the bill failed to adequately regulate the ads.
