Local Martial Artists Headed to World Championships

Posted: Updated:

At Alexander's Martial Arts in Londonderry, 6 young athletes from Southern Vermont and New Hampshire have been kicking, punching and preparing for the chance of a lifetime.  They are headed to the World congress of martial arts world Championships in the Dominican Republic this weekend.

"I'm proud of myself to doing this," Team USA member and Andover native, Michael Maly said.

Qualifying came last October in Springfield, Vermont. Then came training in Londonderry with Master Huzon Alexander, a Team USA coach and former national martial arts champion.

"I told them right off the bat, we're going to work harder than you ever had," Alexander said.  "They've come such a long way and really trying to adapt their brains to say, ok, this is the world congress competition, this is the mindset I need to be in."

"He (Alexander) definitely knows what he's talking about, Team USA member and Tinmouth native,"  Kiara Nauton said.  "I just love the people that I train with and just being able to protect myself is pretty cool."

After 6 months of training for this event, Master Alexander's group will be meeting up with about 150 other members of team USA that will be competing down in the Dominican.

"From what I started with, to what they are now, are very very different competitors," Alexander said.  "I think they're going to be successful for sure."

"What I do is just try my best," Maly said.  "It's what we do.  It's what we all care about.  Just try your best and if you win you win and if you lose you lose."

These six martial artists that don't plan on kicking themselves, because they'll be trying their hardest at the World Championships.
