Community nurse suggested for Thetford

Posted: Updated:

THETFORD, Vt. (AP) - A group of residents in Thetford, Vermont, would like to see the town get a community nurse.

The Thetford Elder Network tells Vermont Public Radio there are similar nurses in Hartland, as well as in Lyme and Lebanon, New Hampshire, although they are not town positions. Lyme's is affiliated with a church parish and Lebanon's is associated with a pilot project out of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Supporters estimate the nurse would work about 10 hours per week and at a cost of around $15,000 per year. The nurse would not be on call for emergency care, but help coordinate assistance for frail, elderly residents and people with specific needs.

The nurse also would also act as a case manager by helping people in navigating various health services.
