Vt. holds auction for state vehicles

Posted: Updated:

Who doesn't love a good deal or who doesn't love a good auction. The state says you can get a deal at its annual auction Saturday in Berlin.

"My name is Bill Beard just like the growth on the chin. B-e-a-r-d," said Bill Beard from buildings and general services.

Beard is in the bidding business.

"Someone starts off with a bid, 500 bucks and off it goes from there. Our goal is to go up, and up, and up and up a lot," said Beard.

Beard's job is to sell the state's stuff at Saturday's auction in Berlin.

There are state police cruisers, snow machines, snowplows and scores of pickup trucks.

"If I was going to buy something it would be one of these plow trucks behind me or a pickup truck with the blades behind me," said Beard.

"They all run pretty good and they will make someone a good truck," said Dave Thurber from the Vermont Department of Transportation.

If traveling by land isn't your boat, you can bid on a fleet of kayaks.

All the money collected will be plowed back into the state's coffers. Beard is betting on a big year.

"I have it somewhere between $800,000 and $900,000 for the state for what we have got here," said Beard.

It's state property that's leaving state government and headed to a small business or maybe a second car for a family. It's a way the state gets its money back after its first investment.

"Everything goes. No reserves. No buyer’s premium. Make a high bid and take it home with you on Saturday," said Thurber.

It's an auction that the state says is good for the taxpayer and the buyer.

Vermont State Vehicle Auction is Sat., May 10, at 10 a.m. at the Agency of Transportation Central Garage at 1756 U.S. Route 302 in Berlin across from the Wayside Restaurant. For more information click here and for a list of the auction items click here.
