A dream come true for St. Michael's grad

Posted: Updated:
COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College graduated hundreds of students Sunday during it's 107th ceremony. It was a day filled with laughter, smiles, reflections and celebrations. And for some students -- a day 10 years in the making.

Students marched through Saint Michael's campus on a beautiful Sunday morning. And for the more than 450 undergraduate and graduate students it was a day to celebrate.

"Wow! Finally after 10 years -- I got this," said new graduate Muhammad Jufrianto. "I have been dreaming for a long time to study abroad and then I got the scholarship."

Jufrianto spent a decade working for a chance to study in America. He says having to leave his family for two years in Indonesia -- St. Michael's truly become his home away from home. The ceremony to celebrate Jufrianto and his fellow students was filled with reflection. "I have never valued friendship as I do since attending Saint Michael's, because the class of 2014 puts value on friendship. We value the people in our class and all the things they have to offer. We all look out for each other -- we all care," said Senior Class President Grace Barney.

And looking towards the future -- no matter how scary big steps can seem. "I've come to realize that change has two edges -- change that we reach for and change that happens to us, and we learn from and adapt to. To me success is what happens when there is some sort of harmony between the two," said Class of 2014 speaker Naleni Cheatham. "For the moment though, let's just enjoy our personal accomplishments in crossing a momentous threshold."

With a diploma in hand, Jufrianto says all the hard work is paying off for him and his entire family. "My wife delivered her baby when I was here, so I cannot meet my son because during my study here I cannot go back because of the policy of my scholarship, so this is for them of course," he said.

Jufrianto will be flying back to Indonesia Tuesday to see his family, and meet his new son for the very first time.
