Guard conducts controlled burn at Camp Johnson

Posted: Updated:
COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Vermont National Guard is conducting a controlled burn on a section of Camp Johnson in Colchester.

The burns are part of an on-going effort to protect and regenerate the Oak-Pine sandplain that makes up a portion of the 600 acre military base. Sandplains are rare geological formations in Vermont and they contain pitch pine trees that need a hot fire to help release the seeds from the cones so they can regenerate. The fire is expected to generate smoke that will be visible in Colchester, Winooski and Essex.
