BAKERSFIELD, Vt. -

Just after 9:30 p.m. Monday, a driver plowed into a house on Route 108 in Bakersfield as the family was winding down, their kids already in their beds.

"We heard this loud, almost sounded like a dirt bike or a 4-wheeler, the raspy sound, and we just heard it smash right into our house and we both just screamed and the first thing we thought of was we've got to get our kids out of the house," homeowner Dusti Pilon said.

She said her kids' bedrooms are right above the crash, but they're fine. Her family is shaken but not hurt. It was a close call though. She said the Jeep crashed just feet from where she and her husband were sitting, and it ran right over their propane tank.

"Sitting on top of a propane tank, we were able to secure the tank and at this time we have no leaks," Bakersfield Fire Chief Todd Cosgrove said.

The driver, Michael Fitzgerald, 30, of East Fairfield, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Police say he had been drinking, something the homeowner told us is unacceptable.

"It's ridiculous. And to know that the guy was drinking and driving, it's ridiculous," Pilon said. "My kids were screaming, they were crying. That's trauma they don't have to endure and that they just did."

Fitzgerald is now facing his second DUI charge, as well as a charge for careless and negligent operation. He'll be in court in June.
