There was a much anticipated groundbreaking Tuesday in Randolph Center.

Dozens of community members gathered on a hill near the Vermont Technical College for the ceremony. Officials from the Gifford Medical Center broke ground on a new 30-bed nursing home facility. Later phases of the project will include 100 independent living apartments and a 20-bed assisted living component. Officials with the medical center say it is a needed addition to the area.

“Does not exist at this point in Orange County, an independent living facility for seniors so it is a huge addition that people have been clamoring for and we just haven't had a way to meet the need to that is part of the longer term build out of the project," said Meyer, Gifford Board Chair.

The first phase of the project will cost around $12 million. The nursing home is expected to take about a year to build. Renovations at the hospital, where the current nursing home is located, will begin after the new facility is finished The total price tag is more than $20 million.
