Effort underway to preserve 1930s Vt. gas station

Posted: Updated:

ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) - The city of St. Albans, Vermont, is trying to find a way to upgrade and preserve what's believed to be the longest continually operating gas station in the state.

The Clarence Brown gas station was built in 1932. The St. Albans Messenger reports some of the gas pumps are in the public right of way. A plan would shift the entire site. But members of the city's Development Review Board say it would be difficult to grant a permit for it under current zoning rules.

The proposal awaits further input from the Design Advisory Board and the Planning Commission.

Jacqueline Brown, the daughter-in-law of the late Clarence Brown, has endorsed the effort to preserve the character of the site.
