Sanders: States should have more say in nuclear plant shutdowns

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Vermont officials want the federal government to give states more say in the decommissioning of old nuclear power plants like Vermont Yankee.

Yankee will close at the end of the year and begin a lengthy and costly dismantling process that will be overseen by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced legislation that would require states within 50 miles of a reactor to be involved in the decommissioning process. Sanders outlined his ideas at Senate hearing Wednesday.

"Now the problem that we're dealing with is that the NRC now does not allow host states any kind of meaningful role in crafting the decommissioning plan despite the obvious impacts to those states," said Sanders, I-Vermont.

Vermont's public service commissioner testified in support of Sanders' bill.
