NH House again passes death penalty repeal bill

Posted: Updated:

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - With its first attempt stalled in the Senate, the House has voted for the second time this year to repeal New Hampshire's death penalty.

The key vote Wednesday was 218-117 to require anyone convicted of capital murder to be sentenced to life in prison. The vote sends the bill back to the Senate. Supporters hope senators will reconsider last month's 12-12 vote on the first repeal bill passed by the House.

The Senate tabled the first bill - leaving open the possibility it could be resurrected - but time is running out before the session ends June 5.

Repeal supporters are hoping the Senate will reconsider since its vote was taken before an execution was botched in Oklahoma.
