Moss wins GOP nomination for NY lieutenant governor

Posted: Updated:

RYE BROOK, N.Y. (AP) - New York's Republican Party has given its nomination for lieutenant governor to a county sheriff from upstate New York who has been a vocal critic of the state's new gun control law.

Chemung County Sheriff Christopher Moss accepted the endorsement Thursday at the state GOP convention Westchester County.

First elected sheriff in 2005, Moss leads the state sheriff's association and has criticized gun control measures championed by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Moss isn't well known outside his home, but Republicans say he will appeal to conservatives and rural voters.

In his acceptance speech, Moss called for the repeal of the new gun law and criticized Cuomo for not allowing hydraulic fracturing for natural gas.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino picked Moss as his running mate earlier this week.
