Thousands race in Vt. Corporate Cup Challenge

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of people gathered on the streets of Montpelier Thursday night to get some exercise and raise some money.

Close to 4,000 runners and walkers were expected to turn out on State Street for the Vermont Corporate Cup Challenge and State Agency Race. For many of them, it was their first 5K and they were excited to get started.

The race draws folks from the Legislature, state agencies and private businesses all across Vermont. There were about 1,000 three-person teams and they really have some fantastic names this year. Among those on this year's roster-- the Running Divas, Kicking Asphalt and the Chili Peppers.

"We all have red hair and we all pretty much have the same build and everything, and we have tempers, maybe. We were going to go with Red Hot Chili Peppers, but we did not want to steal the name of the band, so we just went with Chili Peppers," said Cathy Moony of Washington County Mental Health.

For more than three decades the event has raised thousands of dollars for the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

"They do several different programs throughout the year, and whatnot, throughout the state on promoting physical fitness and sports," said Leslie Davis, the race director.

Some of those initiatives include the Vermont senior games, promoting workplace wellness and activities to promote health and fitness with kids.

"I think that's pretty awesome. I think that everyone in Vermont is pretty tightknit anyway. My boyfriend works at National Life and says there are over 200 just from National Life running," said Lesley Campbell of the Vermont treasurer's office.

"It's a fun team-building thing. We all like fitness, so we do it as a group. We are like a little family," said Jennifer Toce of Birchgrove Baking.
