SHAFTSBURY, Vt. -

Police say a New York woman's embezzlement scheme almost put her boss out of business.

Lisa Taber, 36, of Hoosick Falls, turned herself in to Vermont authorities Thursday. The former secretary at Latif Plumbing and Heating in Shaftsbury is charged with 132 counts of embezzlement and false pretenses. Police say between January and April she stole nearly $50,000 from the company to pay her property taxes and personal bills.

Police say the missing money forced the small business owner to lay off employees and turn down work.

Taber's husband, Jeremy, was also arrested for allegedly threatening his wife's boss for going to the police.
