BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Instead of "Pomp and Circumstance," an original processional will be heard at the University of Vermont's College of Medicine graduation Sunday.

The "Vermont Passacaglia" is composed by Adam Ackerman, a student who also will be receiving his M.D. degree.

The Burlington Free Press reports the 31-year-old Ackerman said he wrote the piece partly out of gratitude to UVM for "taking a chance" on admitting him. He has degrees from the Berklee College of Music and from the New England Conservatory, specializing in music composition.

Ackerman said he was always interested in medicine.

His piece runs about 6 ½ minutes and will be played by a brass quintet.
