Speaker Smith still deciding whether to seek re-election

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Vermont House Speaker Shap Smith says he hasn't decided whether he wants to return to the Legislature next year.

Smith is the leader of the Democratic super-majority in the House of Representatives. But that job would be up in the air if Smith does not run for re-election to his seat representing Morrisville. Smith says he's spending some time away with his family next week and will announce his decision when he returns.

"I love the job. There's more to do. I've been doing it for 12 years, six as speaker," Smith said. "I think it's fair to give my family an opportunity to weigh-in on whether they think I should run again."

Smith has also been mentioned as a possible candidate for lieutenant governor or attorney general, but he says he has no plans to seek statewide office in this election cycle.
