Everything Animals: Turtle Nesting Season

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - Turtle nesting season is just around the corner, and experts say some tiny critters will be on the move.

Fish and wildilfe officials say June is prime nesting time for turtles across our region. Nesting areas for a variety of turtles include sandy beaches, riverbanks, blowouts, sandpits, and soft soils, so officials encourage you to watch your step. They also say if you see turtle in a natural enviornment to leave it alone.

"If a turtle is crossing the road, which we will be seeing pretty soon, you can move them across a road -- if its safe -- in the direction that they are moving," says Vermont Fish & Wildlife biologist Steve Parren. "Don't pick them up and take them home because then they will be lost if they ever go back out in the wild. It's illegal to collect turtles."
