ESSEX, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont teen is in Washington, D.C. to compete against 53 other middle school students in the 26th annual National Geographic Bee.
Fourteen-year-old Nicholas Norton of Essex earlier this month won the Vermont State Geo Bee in Middlebury and the chance to represent the state at the national competition, which starts Monday.
The Burlington Free Press quotes his coach - John Synnott - as saying he faces pretty tough competition but is more than capable of winning. Synnott is with Nicholas in Washington.
The 54 competitors will be whittled down to 10 finalists in preliminary rounds Monday. The finalists will then compete for top honors and three scholarships Wednesday.
The winner will receive a $50,000 scholarship and trip to the Galapagos Islands.
