BURLINGTON, Vt. -
Another financial woe for the Burlington School District.
Around $1.5 million of payment in lieu of taxes, or PILT money, from the city's publicly owned utilities has been going towards the school district since 1997. But now it turns out that violates Act 60. The state has told the board they can keep the money in the current budget but cannot use it for the district come 2016. Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger spoke out about the use of PILT funds Monday.
"I think that there are some questions that still need to be answered about this for future years, but I think things are being sorted out. I appreciate that it looks like the board will have the better course of the year as preparing for the '16 budget to figure out how to handle this going forward," he said.
The Mayor also gave his support for next year's proposed budget and said they will continue to do everything they can to recover from the recent financial problems.
