Obama announces intent on Vermont federal judge

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - President Barack Obama has announced his intention to appoint Vermont Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Crawford to a spot on the federal court for Vermont.

Crawford, who has been on the state Supreme Court about a year, had previously served more than a decade as a Superior Court judge in Vermont. Crawford was born in 1954 and got his undergraduate degree from Yale and his law degree from Harvard.

Vermont's federal courts currently are at full strength, but Judge William Sessions announced recently his plan to scale back to senior status, or semi-retirement.

Sen. Patrick Leahy recommended Crawford for the job after screening by a nine-member Vermont Judicial Nominating Commission. The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee says he looks forward to having Crawford in for a confirmation hearing.
