Another step to eliminate free parking at Burlington Town Center Mall

Posted: Updated:

Free parking at the Burlington Town Center Mall may soon be a thing of the past. Monday night, the City Council took action on the topic. In an 11-2 vote, councilors voted in favor of doing away with two hours of free parking at the Burlington Town Center mall.

Burlington community and economic development says the money the garage will now generate from users will help pay for badly needed repairs. Developers also said they are investing in bringing new tenants to the mall, including a new national anchor store.

Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger spoke in favor of eliminating the free parking at the mall, but stressed that he does not support getting rid of all free parking options across the city.

"I think it would be premature for the council to conclude that free parking is going away. Certainly changes to that program are under consideration, but I think people should understand that this vote tonight does not prejudge the outcome of that discussion," said Weinberger, D-Burlington.

The Weinberger administration also says the elimination of the free parking at the mall will be contingent on the facility securing a new anchor tenant, something the mayor's chief of staff says has not happened yet.

Once a new anchor tenant is secure and some serious new investment is made at the mall the new parking costs will go into effect. As of now, there is no set date on when you'll have to break out your wallet when parking at the mall or what it will cost you.
