Williston eyed for new park-and-ride location

WILLISTON, Vt. -

A solution is in the works to boost park-and-ride capacity in Chittenden County.

Regional planners have identified a new site in Williston for an additional park-and-ride location. The 5.5-acre property off the interstate would be large enough to accommodate 144 vehicles and a bus stop for possible Link service. The location would also accommodate bicycle parking for folks looking to meet up with a carpool.

"Our objective in the state is to get more people riding together through carpooling and taking the bus and leaving their vehicle at home, so we have less people driving alone, reducing congestion on the roadways," said Michele Boomhower of the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission.

Purchasing the privately owned land and completing construction could cost taxpayers $1.5 million. The project still needs to pass a number of permitting hurdles including Act 250 approval, but construction could begin as soon as next year.
