NEK farming legend battles cancer

Posted: Updated:

Vermont farming legend, Jack Lazor, is known for his Butterworks Farm yogurt but something many people don't know is that he's battling cancer. With mounting medical bills the community is pitching in to help out.

The land is Jack Lazor's passion and it's been that way for the past 40 years. He owns Butterworks Farm in Westfield where he produces popular dairy products along with cornmeal.

Four years ago Lazor was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He suffered kidney failure because of it and needs dialysis every day, but that hasn't stopped Lazor from farming.

Lazor is far from wealthy monetarily. He dropped his insurance in 2008 with the economic downturn which meant a bill of more than $70,000 for an eight day stay in the hospital last year.

But the community is rallying around Lazor. Caledonia Spirits in Hardwick is releasing a limited edition of whiskey made from corn on Butterworks Farm. A special gift box containing the whiskey and other Vermont products is being sold for $140. The proceeds are going to Lazor's medical bills.

And there's a lot left for Lazor to do including inspiring people around him to be as courageous and as kind as he is.
