Chittenden County students explore the great outdoors

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Hundreds of kids from across the region traded in the classroom for the great outdoors Wednesday.

About 300 fifth-graders filled the Ethan Allen Homestead for its annual Conservation Field Day. The kids came from schools in Burlington, South Burlington, Essex, Jericho and Williston to learn about things like wastewater management, endangered species and the environment.

"I liked learning about, there's different ways you can recycle, that you can reuse, then fabric, you can reuse that if you want to," said Phoenix Fleischman from Founders Memorial School.

"Our hope is to broaden awareness for the kids about the environment, natural resources to get them out of the classroom and out into nature doing hands-on activities," said Lauren Chicote, from the Winooski Valley Park District.

Organizers say the event is aimed at getting kids to explore nature with hopes that they'll be able to share some of what they've picked up with friends and family at home.
