Prison move sought for man who killed niece

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Lawyers for a man sentenced in Vermont to life in prison say he's at risk of being killed by other inmates because of his reputation as a serial child sex offender.

The Burlington Free Press reports lawyers for Michael Jacques asked that he be assigned to a high-security federal penitentiary in Tuscon, Arizona, that specializes in housing convicted sex offenders.

Jacques pleaded guilty to abducting and raping his 12-year-old niece, Brooke Bennett, and then killing her. He was sentenced Tuesday.

Records show Jacques sexually assaulted at least four other girls.

Jacques' lawyers asked a judge to recommend the move, but he denied the request, leaving the decision to prison authorities.

Jacques has been incarcerated since his 2008 arrest at federal detention center in New York.
