Vt. businessman hopes to bring Chinese students to Newport

Posted: Updated:

NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont businessman says he has a plan to bring Chinese students to Newport where they would pay tuition to attend North Country Union High School.

Brad Ashley, of Kingdom Development Company in St. Johnsbury, would have the 20 students live in a vacant convent building.

Ashley helped officials in South Korea build a school based on the St. Johnsbury Academy.

He now says he has a verbal agreement with a counterpart in China to bring 20 Chinese students to North Country in their senior year.

Ashley's plan would be to rent the convent and convert it into a residence for the students, which could eventually expand to 40 students.

The Caledonian Record reports the North Country board is supportive of the idea.
