SHOREHAM, Vt. -

A Shoreham man set a new state record while fishing on Lake Champlain this spring.

Darren Ouelette caught a common carp weighing in at 44-pounds, 6-ounces. That's nearly 2 pounds more than the previous record.

Ouelette landed the giant while fishing with bow and arrow in the southern part of the lake.

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife department notes that this is a common carp, a species that has been in Lake Champlain since the 1800s, and is not to be confused with the invasive Asian carp which have become a nuisance in other parts of the country.
