South Burlington Fire Department honored

Posted: Updated:

The South Burlington Fire Department received high honors Thursday.

The department just received a lifesaving award from the American Heart Association. Firefighters were recognized for their efforts to improve care for heart attack patients.

"It's all about the identification of those patients in the field and then the proper treatment and procedures to get them to the hospital, so that they can receive that treatment," said Chief Douglas Brent from the South Burlington Fire Dept.

"There's a saying that 'time is tissue.' The earlier we notify the hospital the earlier they can activate their Cardiac Catheterization Lab and then the earlier we can bypass the emergency room and get the patient transferred to that Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and the quicker they can get that clot opened up," said Nick Perkov, South Burlington Fire Dept. senior firefighter.

The South Burlington department is the only one in northern New England that has achieved the Heart Association's standard of care for this type of heart attack patient.
