Winooski car crash causes gas scare

WINOOSKI, Vt. -

A car crash caused a gas scare in Winooski.

Just before 5 p.m. a sedan slammed into a tree and hit two gas meters at an apartment complex off Main Street. Police say the driver thought her car was in reverse when she stepped on the gas. Two apartments were evacuated and Vermont Gas was called in to shut off the meters.

"We went in with Vermont Gas and did measurements for natural gas in the buildings. There was none. So there are no leaks at this point. We're hoping it stays that way and get everything cleaned up," said Chief David Bergeron from the Winooski Fire Department.

The chief tells us the woman is a new driver. Vermont Gas is on standby in case the line starts to leak when the car is towed from the scene.
