History sets sail on Lake Champlain

Posted: Updated:
VERGENNES, Vt. -

Some Vermont students are making maritime history with the creation of a 19th century whaling boat.

Over the past years, students and teachers from the Hannaford Career Center worked with the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum to build a replica of the boats used during the height of the whaling industry. It was put in the water Thursday at Basin Harbor in Vergennes.

The boat was built for use on board the Charles W. Morgan, the last remaining wooden whaling ship in the U.S. The Morgan is a floating museum in Mystic, Connecticut, that will soon be making its first voyage in 80 years.
