Vermont Police Academy graduates new officers

Posted: Updated:

Vermont has 45 new law enforcement officers.

The Vermont Police Academy in Pittsford graduated its 97th class Friday morning as friends, family and even some canines looked on.

Graduates received their certificates of completion and were pinned by their loved ones after completing training which started in February.

Gov. Peter Shumlin, D-Vermont, congratulated the graduates and called law enforcement "the bedrock of our state" and said their profession is needed in Vermont now more than ever.

"Crime rates, in this state, mostly because of addiction, are rising...that to feed their addiction addicts will rip off your car, your store and your business." said Shumlin.

The academy graduated new officers in the Burlington and Rutland police departments as well as the Vermont State Police and other law enforcement agencies.
