Burlington prepares for marathon

Posted: Updated:

Police are warning drivers that you might want to avoid downtown Burlington this Sunday.

That's because it's the 26th annual KeyBank Vermont City Marathon.

Runners get going at 8 a.m.

On Friday Police were busy getting prepared. Signs, tents and fences are going up at the starting area in Battery Park and the finish line in Waterfront Park.

About 8,000 runners and thousands more spectators will take to the 26 mile course around the Queen City Sunday morning.

"It will take a little longer; you can still go down the avenue. Just watch out for runners. On Pine Street there's just a smaller lane where runners get a lane too. So absolutely, patience, just give yourself a little more time, again if you can bike or walk in the area, because you can just go right by a traffic officer there," said Corporal Carolynne Erwin, from the Burlington Police Department.

Streets will be closed on a rolling basis beginning with Battery Street.
