Shoreham man lands monster fish

Posted: Updated:

Fishing on Lake Champlain is full of surprises and this week Darren Ouelette of Shoreham got quite a big one.

He was bow and arrow fishing Tuesday when he snagged a huge carp. It weighed 44 pounds-six onces and was new state record for the native species in Lake Champlain.

He and his fishing buddy, Taylor Patterson, had quite a challenge on their hands to land this monster.

"We got a little spot we go to every year and it's usually worked out pretty good, ...I knew I hooked into a good one when it started going and the boat started going with it...I said this is going to be a fight... but we managed to hook into it, get an arrow into it by the time we got it back to the boat 20 minutes had gone by... So with my buddy's help we managed to lift it into the boat and roll it into the boat and then we just kind of sat there and wondered what we were going to do from there," said Ouelette.

And for the record, no, he won't say exactly where he caught it. We only know it was at the South end of the lake.
