Honoring veterans in Essex Junction

Posted: Updated:
ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. - Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and what better way to celebrate than spending it outside.

"Be with family and be thoughtful of those who have lost their lives to protect us," says Diana Halvorsen of Essex Junction.

Thousands came out to the 29th Essex Memorial Day Parade, to salute the men and women who died defending our country.

"Ah, I mean come on. I've never had a better day. And I got a beach ball," says Cameron Towne of Essex Junction.

Parade floats, bands, and more marched the nearly mile long route.  According to parade officials, its one of the biggest parades in Vermont.

"I have come every year. I am a dedicated participant in the parade," says Kelly Green of Winooski.

This year, parade goers lucked out with the weather. Kenneth Tobin comes to honor fallen veterans at the Essex Memorial Day parade every year, rain or shine.

"Usually have all kinds of weather here. Sometimes it's rainy, sometimes it's sunny. I brought my umbrella today 'cause I don't know what's going to happen," says Tobin of Essex Junction.

Americans came from all corners of Vermont to the five corners of Essex Junction for the parade. Parade officials ask parade watchers to stand whenever our flag passes by, to honor those veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"Everybody's worked really hard. Our whole parade committee... we have 12 members who spend most of the year working on the parade," says Mary Tewarson, a member of the Essex Junction Parade Committee.

Banner carriers, musicians, and those currently serving our country were all acknowledged and cheered on by the spectators.

"The bagpipes. I love to hear the bagpipes," says Halvorsen.

A Memorial Day to remember.
