Vergennes hosts the state's largest Memorial Day parade

Posted: Updated:
VERGENNES, Vt. -

It's a day to honor our fallen military members and remember the sacrifices made for our country.

"We've had a lot of family and friends that have served. Can't imagine what they've been through, some of them," said Pat Wager from West Addison.

The Vergennes Memorial Day Parade paid tribute to Veterans who were killed in combat but will never be forgotten. It’s a celebration that for Karen Spear and her family is a patriotic tradition.

"We've come every year for about 20 years. We love it, it's the best parade you can get," said Spear.

"I'm a teacher, I love seeing all of my students, all of my family, hi Ferrisburgh families! Absolutely love being here and seeing everybody," said Karen's daughter.

For a front row seat to Vermont's largest parade there is no such thing as overdressing.

And what better to honor the courage of servicemen and woman than marching bands and flags flying high.

"It is just amazing what they do for everybody and we're so proud of them,"

"I'm just here to celebrate Memorial Day with Vermonters. It's always a great parade here in Vergennes, can't beat it," said Gov. Peter Shumlin (D- Vermont.)

And while the holiday comes just once a year, every day is a day to remember the sacrifices made for our country.
