Memorial Day means big business for meat markets

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Among the parades, celebrations, and ceremonies there were the barbecues. For butchers and meat markets Memorial Day means big business.

"Me and my girlfriend decided to have a barbecue," said Hary Lindberg from Burlington.

As do many people on this Memorial Day weekend. While we honor our fallen war vets we also take time to celebrate our freedom.

And no barbeque is complete without meat.

"We got this bacon going right here," said Kent Richland. "Some pepperoni bacon cheese burgers with kind of a sausage thing going on over here."

All things that Bessery's Quality Market in Burlington knows a thing or two about.

"It is the beginning of summer. Everyone who is gonna barbecue will barbecue this weekend," said Bryan Bessery

Bessery says Memorial Day weekend kicks off their busy season.

"Our store numbers triple, quadruple on this day and then they stay busy throughout the summer," said Bessery.

And the big ticket item was Bessery's house made sausage. Bessery's went through over 300 pounds just this weekend.

"When the suns out in the summer, I always say there’s like a banner in front of the sun that say Besserys because people just start thinking about it and maybe they don’t come in as much in the winter but as soon as its grilling weather, we're their first thought," said Bessery.

And these meat lovers are ready for the carnivore kick.
