Man rescued from Winooski River

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - A man walking along the Winooski River fell 30 feet and prompted a rescue in South Burlington.

Authorities say the 22-year-old victim was walking with a friend along a cliff behind Berard Drive in South Burlington. He lost his footing, slipped and landed in the water. His friend called for help and climbed between the rocks to pull the victim onto a small ledge.

"They sketched out where they thought they were and what they could see from where they were. So it took us a few minutes to find out where they were and figure out how we were going to get to them," said Chief Douglas Brent, from South Burlington Fire Department.

Colchester Technical Rescue eventually reached the injured man and his friend by boat. Paramedics treated the victim on the river bank, then transported him to the hospital to be checked out.

Two dozen firefighters and six agencies worked together to safely rescue the men.
