Concerns over new Vt. state hospital

Posted: Updated:
BERLIN, Vt. -

Some lawmakers are concerned about the cost of Vermont's new state psychiatric hospital.

The Berlin facility is set to open in July.

It was built after Tropical Storm Irene destroyed the former Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury.

The old hospital cost $22 million a year to run.

The new facility's first-year operating budget is about $19 million even though it is about half the size of the old hospital.

Officials says the new model is more expensive because it devotes more staff to each patient.
