Lake water quality patrol boat back for summer

Posted: Updated:

NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) - Patrols have started to watch out for blue-green algae and other problems on Lake Memphremagog, shared by Vermont and Canada.

Students with the University of Sherbrooke, Quebec, form the team on the lake for Memphremagog Conservation Inc., an international organization.

The Caledonian Record reports that in addition to monitoring for the algae, three students will look for excessive sedimentation, erosion, work on the shore and tree cutting.

The patrol will be on the lake seven days a week until September.

Studies have found that the lake is aging prematurely due to excess sedimentation from runoff due to development and farm and road practices in the watershed.
