Shumlin highlights importance of lake cleanup at fishing derby

COLCHESTER, Vt. -

Vermont is about to submit a comprehensive plan to the Environmental Protection Agency to clean up Lake Champlain. Gov. Peter Shumlin highlighted the importance of our waterways at the Governor's Cup fishing derby in Colchester. The governor says Friday the state is sending in the most aggressive plan yet to clean up the lake.

"It begins a process that gets both federal and we'll have to use some of our own resources and look at the biggest pollution factors in the lake and getting after reducing those sources," said Shumlin, D-Vermont.

The governor says the plan targets the three main areas responsible for the pollution: runoff from farms, dirt roads and developed areas.

The governor didn't have much luck catching any fish, but the team for Ray's Seafood did. The Ray's team led the pack at Wednesday's derby.
