Insurance claims spike after the storm

BRIDPORT, Vt. -

This week's wild weather caused all kinds of problems in a number of Vermont counties.

People in Addison and Rutland counties are filing insurance claims for the damage to their cars, barns, homes and other items. One insurance company in Rutland says it had more than 100 reports of damage by the middle of Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service also filled us in on its findings.

"We didn't find any evidence of a tornado," said Andy Nash of the National Weather Service.

Tornado or not, one Pittsford resident said the hail from Tuesday's storm was as strong as he's seen it.

“I don't think I've ever seen it like that, and like I said, I've lived around here for 70 years, and I've never seen anything like that,” said Rich Belder.

Belder's truck sustained significant hail damage.

“You get just right, you see it. There is a lot of it there. There, there, there, there,” Belder explained.

The storm was strong enough to bring the National Weather Service to Addison and Rutland counties where it reported unusually strong wind gusts.

"All we saw was evidence of strong straight long winds, probably on the order of in spots upwards of 75-85 miles per hour," said Nash.

No injuries were reported, but Larry Lussier of Cornwall had quite a story to tell.

"My grill was setting right back there, and it was sitting right next to that refrigerator. I rolled it all the way back, and when I turned my back, I got about here. I wound up over there by that red chair. Without walking down these steps, I would up right in here, and then I just crawled on my hands and knees because I heard the tree crack. Boy, it scared the devil out of me," Lussier said, demonstrating how he was blown right off his porch.

As quickly as the storms swept through, residents started sending in claims to their insurance companies while others worked to clean up the damage caused by this supercell.

An auto body shop in Rutland tells me it did more than 50 estimates by 3 p.m. Wednesday on cars dinged up by hail.
