BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The University of Vermont has announced a major gift from an alumnus.

1964 grad Jack Silver and his wife, Shirley, are donating $5 million to the school.

The money will be used to help pay for improvements to the Billings Library building, one of the iconic structures on the UVM green. The 19th century building will be rehabbed and renamed for the Silvers. The gift will also help pay for the renovation of the old Delta Psi fraternity house on Summit Street. That building will be known as Alumni House and will be used for campus events.
