Hit-and-run investigation in Colchester and Essex

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Police say a medical emergency led a driver to hit a cyclist in Essex before crashing into a second car in Colchester.

The accidents happened along Route 2A shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday

Investigators say Patten Harvey, 47, of Hinesburg, was driving his Subaru when he struck a man on his bike before heading north into Colchester and getting involved in a second crash.

Witnesses tell us that same man did not stop and that another driver used his own car to keep the man from crashing into nearby children.

"There is an apartment building down the street and there was children there, and he was afraid he was going to to hit children, so he stopped him by putting his vehicle in front of him," said Denise Cochran, who witnessed the crash.

Harvey was taken to the hospital. Police would not comment on his medical condition. But they do say alcohol was not a factor. The bicyclist, Sergio Vallerio, 56, of Colchester, is reported in stable condition at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

Both the Essex and Colchester police departments are conducting their own investigations.
