A tractor trailer full of Boar's Head cheese burst into flames and caused a major traffic jam on Interstate 89.

"The flames were just going everywhere," said Lucas Laxale, who witnessed the fire.

Laxale's visit to Vermont got a bit more exciting Friday during his drive on I-89 just north of the Richmond exit.

"I've never seen anything like this and in Austraila you drive a lot, yeah, never seen anything like it," said Laxale.

The man from Down Under saw 34,000 pounds of cheese go up in smoke.

"I looked at the fire and was like mate that's too gnarly, I'm like that thing could f----- explode," said Laxale.

A tractor trailer carrying cheese burst into flames. Police say it appears the trailer's brakes malfunctioned, caught fire and the flames spread fast.

"I was coming around the corner and I saw a plume of black smoke," said Mark Cassier, who also witnessed the fire.

The driver of the Boar's Head truck jumped into action. He quickly detached the big rig's cab from the trailer to save it from frying, but during that process he suffered a medical incident and was rushed to the hospital. Numerous police and fire departments responded and blocked traffic from going by the burning trailer.

"We were told to stop right there and the thing just went up more in flames," said Cassier.

Cars backed up for miles. Police then directed vehicles off the interstate. But some, like Luxale, were stuck for at least an hour.

"I tried to reverse but as you can see there's a big line of traffic," said Cassier.

WCAX has reached out to Boar's Head for comment and to get a price tag on the amount of cheese lost in the fire, but have not heard back yet.
