New information in black bear search in southern Vermont

Posted: Updated:
WEST BRATTLEBORO, Vt. -

We have new information about a bear wildlife officials are tracking in Southern Vermont.

Forrest Hammond leads the Black Bear Project for the state. He says this is a very unique situation because the 15-month-old bear was tagged in Connecticut, which means they have a chance to learn more about the movement of the bear.

He tells us they'll be reaching out to their counterparts in Massachusetts to learn more.

"We're interested enough in this as a case study that we'll contact them to try and get reports and what the bears history was as it travelled north. This is a pretty neat situation you can actually identify the specific bear. It's got bright red ear tags with the number 024," says Forrest Hammond, the state's black bear project leader.

Hammond says the bear was denned under a porch in Connecticut and captured, tagged and released after the homeowners called wildlife agents.
