Jazzing it up in the Queen City

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Discover Jazz Festival is underway in Burlington.

It's a festival has grown through the years and is now at about 70 artists, including some big names like Tony Bennett.

"It really puts us on the map. I mean, we could be just another small city that isn't seeing the big-name acts, and instead, we're hosting a festival that brings some of the best performers in the business," says performer Danielle O'Hallisey with "Storm Cats."

But performers say trying to define jazz is hard.

"The spontenaiety and the improvisation of it all. It changes from band to band, musician to musician, song to song. One band will play the song completely different than another band," says Joe Cannizzaro with "Storm Cats."

And officials say the festival could mean big bucks for local businesses along Church Street.

"It makes summer wonderful. And it brings us tourists and people who are dining and shopping and that's all good for the retail in the area and also for the Vermont economy," says Becky Cassidy with Church Street Marketplace.

But performers say they'd be happy if the people who showed up called for an encore.

"Got their foot tapping and want to hear something again, that would be a success," Cannizzaro says.

The 10-day event runs through June 8.You can fid more information on the list of performers here: http://discoverjazz.com/
