Maddie's Fund holds free pet adoption day

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

It's the first time in Vermont for free cat and dog adoptions.

"I wanted to get a new friend so I came on down," says Damon Fitch of South Burlington.

Fitch is taking home a cat, 1 of 60 animals up for adoption at the Humane Society of Chittenden County.

"I adopted Monkey. And Monkey, he's a little bit shy, but I've got a pretty quiet home so I think we'll be a good match for each other," says Fitch.

It's all part of the national campaign "Maddie's Pet Adoption Days," funded by "Maddie's Fund."

"Maddie's Fund was started by this very generous man who had a dog named Maddie, who ended up passing away. He started this fund to get more sheltered animals homes," says Shayla Macdowell of the Humane Society of Chittenden County.

12 different animal shelters and rescue groups in the state of Vermont are participating in Maddie's Pet Adoption Days. Vermont is the first state to take part this year in the free adoptions, which will eventually expand to 600 cities across the U.S.

"An adoption fee can be a barrier to adoption. So while we would love to be able to offer free animals to people as a policy, it's just not possible for us to stay in business and do that," says Macdowell.

Maddie's Fund is giving $10,000,000 to animal shelters across the nation taking part in the free adoptions. For every animal who goes to a new home, Maddie's Fund gives that shelter up to $2,000. One family is taking home a cat... and a dog.

"Yeah we'll see what happens when we get home. But it should be okay, seems like she's going to be able to hold her own," says Kirsten Cheney of Jericho.

Maddie's Pet Adoption Days is in its 5th year, funding hundreds of shelters to find pets new homes.

"It's great that there's people out there willing to put up a little bit of money so that all these great cats and dogs can go home to a loving environment," says Fitch.

They say the best things in life are free, and this weekend, that means these furry friends too.
