Birdies for Books in Pittsford

Posted: Updated:

Christian Stevens is an educator and disc golf enthusiast. Stevens and dozens of others competed in the 2nd annual Birdies for Books Disc Golf tournament at the Pittsford Recreation Center on Saturday.

"We still need books. Internet is a great resource but supporting the Pittsford Library for the community is a wonderful thing," said Stevens.

Participants tackled an 18 hole course to raise funds for Pittsford's Maclure Library, a place where library officials say technology and regular old books go hand in hand.

"We have access to recorded books so people who want to listen to them on their iPads or iPhones can do that. We also have downloadable audio books and downloadable ebooks that people can access through our website," said Bonnie Stewart, Maclure Library Director.

Stewart thinks that increased access to technology gets students more excited about reading.

"It is just another way of accessing the information. Some people I guess have a problem with that but I really don't at all," said Stewart.

Kids over at the library played games that go along with books a kind of outlet educators say creates a richer experience for children who use technology.

Tournament participants say that no matter the outcome on a mild day like Saturday, playing disc golf in the woods with family and friends, and raising funds for a good cause, everyone wins.

"I think that's a good thing, the library is good for everybody," said player Luke Lendway.

"It's a great time. Get in the woods with friends, family. I've come out with my parents, see some of my students out here."
